We are back with iconic oscar moments that let us look at the sweet side of the Academy that has become kind of bleak now. I know that with all the *ughm* slapping controversy that has been making the rounds, you may feel that Oscars have always been this way, only controversies and no real, happy and revolutionary moments. Well, no there are plenty of iconic moments that were revolutionary for the film industry and in some ways for certain communities. Its time to jump on the nostalgia train and look upon some of the best moments that shaped Oscar history

1) 1940: Hattie McDaniel becomes the first black Oscar winner

History was made when Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her amazing portrayal as Mammy, a slave on the Georgia plantation Tara — in “Gone with the Wind”. This was a huge deal back then as segregation was still hugely prevalent in the 1940s. In fact, Hattie McDaniel herself was made to sit in the back due to segregation. This was an iconic moment that is still important to the black community all over the world.

2)1973: Marlon Brando turns down his Oscar

Marlon Brando who had won the prestigious best actor award for his role in the “The Godfather” turned down his award. He was one of the first actors who used his platform as a stage to address important political issues. He sent Sacheen Littlefeather, a native American to give a speech on his behalf. She informed that the reason he didn’t accept this award today was the horrible representation of Native Americans onscreen. Of course, she was met with backlash but both she and Marlon Brando don’t regret this iconic move to this day

3)2009: Heath Ledger wins a posthumous Oscar

Heath Ledger as we know is an amazing actor who was best known for his roles in “The Dark Knight”, “Brokeback Mountain” and several other iconic movies. His sudden death due to overdose was a tragedy that took Hollywood by a storm. Heath Ledger was awarded best supporting actor for his remarkable portrayal as the dark villain “Joker”. His family and his daughter Matilda, who was three years old at the time accepted this prestigious award on his behalf.

4)2009: AR Rahman becomes the first Indian to win two oscars

AR Rahman who is an absolute music icon in India finally got the recognition he deserves when he won two awards at the 81st Academy Awards. The “Mozart of Madras” won original score for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and the other for the amazing global hit ‘Jai Ho’ from the same film. He is a true legend that cemented India’s name and glory in the world-famous Oscars.

5)2020: Parasite wins four Oscars

“Parasite” which was a terrifyingly real portrayal of the poor community in South Korea astonished the viewers by winning four awards at the 92’nd Academy Awards. They won, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. It was the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
